A castle, a slide or the curiosity to discover what lies inside can draw a child into a playground. In a shopping centre atrium, the design also needs to turn an open, highly visible setting into a distinctive attraction with varied play experiences.
For Wacky Kingdom in the UK, Funlandia combined Viking exploration, Nordic ice and snow, seafaring and polar adventure in a themed indoor soft play environment, bringing the story into the activities children explore.
The atrium’s open layout makes the attraction visible from several directions, placing equal importance on its overall appearance and finer details.
Timber-toned castle towers form the centrepiece. Shields, nautical symbols and geometric patterns establish the Viking character, while blue ice features introduce a Nordic polar atmosphere. Varied rooflines and lighting along their edges give the playground the layered appearance of an adventure village.
The theme extends across towers, bridges and play equipment, creating a consistent identity that attracts attention from a distance and offers more to discover up close.
02 CONNECTED PLAY
The design makes use of the atrium’s height, combining raised platforms, rope bridges, climbing passages and obstacles with a large slide complex. Yellow and blue tube slides provide a visual highlight while connecting play across different levels.
Children can climb padded steps, cross bridges and navigate challenges before sliding back down. Ball pools and soft play areas offer a change of pace below.
These connected activities balance movement with opportunities to pause, adding variety to the available space and encouraging children to explore again.
03 FAMILY EXPERIENCE
Designed for children under 12, Wacky Kingdom accommodates different stages of development. A dedicated toddler area offers approachable activities, while other zones provide greater challenges. The mix allows children of different ages and abilities to find suitable experiences.
A seating area at the front gives parents space to rest, supervise and socialise. The overall layout considers the needs of the whole family and allows possibilities for birthday parties and family gatherings.
04 DESIGN TO DELIVERY
Wacky Kingdom brings together Funlandia’s approach to theming, space planning and the family experience. Its Viking identity, multi-level layout and age-appropriate activities work together to define the attraction.
